Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
