Each time a major honors show nears, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
